Cellist, James Barralet, studied with Hannah Roberts at the RNCM and Thomas Demenga at Basel Hochschule für Musik, and with Steven Isserlis and Ralph Kirshbaum at the International Musicians’ Seminar in Prussia Cove.
Since graduating from Basel with the prestigious Soloists’ Diploma in 2006, he has given solo recitals at the Wigmore Hall, Bridgewater Hall, Purcell Room and at many Europe-wide music festivals including Cheltenham, Mecklenberg, Steirisches, Zeitkunst, Ryedale. He is the Artistic Director of the Whittington Chamber Music Festival in Shropshire, now in its eighth year.
James has recorded three solo CDs with Landor and Somm records and a free improvisation CD with his band, Bay’s Leap. He has been a member of the improvising and composing Ignite Ensemble based at the Wigmore Hall since 2009, giving workshops for children with special needs and people living with dementia. A special interest in Indian music has led to collaborations with Amjad Ali Khan, Tarun Jasani and Sanjay Guha.
He is a prolific arranger of cello ensemble music and has received many commissions worldwide including the Beijing Festival (where he was also invited to perform), Royal Academy of Music and Basel Symphony Orchestra. He has also been invited to guest-lead the cello sections of many of the UK’s main professional orchestras and film music session orchestras.
